Christmas Tree Decorations

It's Christmas time again ... another year has flashed by and no doubt you're beginning to think about your christmas tree and how you're going to decorate it.

The Christmas Tree and its decorations are pretty much the focus of most homes at this time of the year, so it's no wonder that the whole trying to get it right thing can be somewhat stressful.

Believe me, I'm generally pretty chilled out and laid back about the way my home looks, but the thought of my mother breezing by and being disdainful about my hopeless festive decor fills me with dread, so something has to be done.

I need to get hold of a large tree and abundant, tasteful decorations - now generally quantity and good taste don't sit comfortably together, this is pretty much a truism, the one exception being when it comes to Christmas Tree Decoration!!

Top Tips for Getting the Christmas Tree Done Properly

For a trouble free Christmas, I've devised the following steps that I follow every Christmas, known as Jeremiah's Guide to Christmas Tree Decoration, it has served me well with only minor adjustments for the last 20 years.

  1. Find the Biggest tree that you think would reasonably fit in your home, then ask for the next size up.
  2. Gather up Last-Year's decorations - you've kept them stored safely in a box since then haven't you (if not start this year and next year will be less painfull)
  3. Buy one or two NEW baubles to hang on the tree, this is over and above replacing anything that seems to have got damaged during the year's storage. (basically over the years the idea is to get more and more stuff thus weighing the tree down with your xmas mastery)
  4. Ensure the Christmas tree lights are working, (again, buy some, if you don't have - basically if this is your fist time, then expect the Christmas Tree Decorating process to be somewhat costly)
  5. Begin with the lights - they used to be called fairy lights - string them from the inside of the tree and work outwards.
  6. Christmas balls, these are pretty essential, the trick is to make sure you don't hang them all from the ends of branches, ensure some are deeper into the tree - I kid you not, this is important, it creates a better sense of depth and fullness.
  7. Then add the more specialist decorations, ones with sentimental value and the new ones you've bought specially fro this year, you'll have less of these, so hang them in prominent places.
  8. Finally I think you should hang some of those foil wrapped chocolate Father Christmases in strategic positions, this is actually very traditional, plus any visiting kids will enjoy them, not to mention adults who are several glasses of wine into the festivities.
